Healthy Children Happy Children

by Dr. Norman Easley
After years of evaluating children in my clinical practice, I have learned that there are five primary factors influencing the health of a child. Four of these categories apply to adults as well, except children have one extra issue that makes them unique. |
 |
| 1. Genetics establishes the potential of the child. |
|
| 2. Diet influences the child according to their genetic inclinations. |
|
| 3. Toxins create acquired disorders. The type of toxin and the duration of exposure determine the scope and characteristics of the reaction. Here again genetics establishes susceptibility, the extent of insult and oftentimes the location. |
|
| 4. Traumas in the form of injuries or psychological stress can stimulate the onset of a disorder. This is also based on genetic susceptibility. Extreme or prolonged traumas can even facilitate the beginning of new conditions that are not in the hereditary patterns. |
|
| 5. The digestive tract of a child continues to develop for as much as two years after birth provided their circumstances are optimum. This is the extra factor involved in children's health. A child's gall bladder on average requires two years. The small intestine requires one to two years. However, if a child consumes foods that stress a specific undeveloped digestive function, then completed development will take longer. Some cases can require as much as seven years to complete digestive functions and might never occur if the dietary insult continues. |

Case Histories of Children
Toddler with Constipation
I treated an 18 month old child suffering from constipation. The mother is health oriented and was feeding her child avocados, olive oil, non-dairy margarines, and a few other rich foods. The child's gall bladder was not ready to manage these fats. This caused sluggish bile flow producing constipation, and an occasional upset stomach. Removing these foods and promoting normal bile flow corrected the problem within a week.
Six Year Old with Stomach Aches
I evaluated another case with the same symptoms but with more severe stomachaches. This girl was six years old. She had the same history as the previous child but four additional years of a physically stressful diet. Once the diet improved and the necessary natural therapies were prescribed to finalize the maturation of the gall bladder she was fine. Because of the duration of the condition, however, several months were required to remedy the girl's gall bladder.
Digestion is Key
The digestive functions of a child often provide the origin to most disorders. Knowing this makes it easier to manage childhood disorders. This includes skin conditions, allergies, frequent illness and behavioral conditions such as ADD, hyper kinesis, depression, clingy behavior, and even lack of respect and anger. This makes dietary influences even more central to their health.

It is a gift to have healthy children! I appreciate that state in my kids whenever it is there! When it isn't it's hard to concentrate on anything else, even when I have to.
It's nice to have Dr. Easley living in the same house when that happens, but I'm sure it's a bummer to be a Doc 24/7 sometimes. I make sure that the ol' adage about the plumber having the leaky faucet at home does not apply in our house!
Well, when Mama said you'd better shop around, she was right! Genetics play a very important role in a child's health potential. I remember seeing a T.V. show that talked about the science of attraction. Our subliminal physical attraction revolves around each other's health and virility. There is even a smell of health including genetic compatibility through our pheromones! Nowadays as more and more women are choosing genetic donations through sperm banks when having children it becomes more of an intellectual choice. I wonder if these ladies are having healthier kids?!

Looking at the Big Picture of Children's Health
Understanding how all these factors mold together to create a child's health profile is critical to understanding the severity of a condition and their potential for healing. Evaluating a child therefore involves a thorough understanding of hereditary inclinations, dietary practices of the mother during pregnancy, the child's current diet, dietary intolerances, and a history of any potential toxin exposures or traumas. Finally, calculating the onset of symptoms and duration is critical for understanding how much time will be required to follow the necessary treatment plan.
• Genetic Origin: When the child was born with a condition that a parent or close relative also shares. These are more difficult and generally require the most time to resolve.
• Acquired conditions present at birth but are genetically unfamiliar are usually caused by the mother's diet or toxin exposure during the pregnancy or the birth. These conditions are generally easier to treat and require less time.
• Acquired conditions manifesting as the child grows, result from improper diet, toxin exposure, traumas or from the phenomenon of biological clocks. Acquired conditions require less treatment time, unless they are hereditary with a specific onset age (biological clocks).
• A hereditary condition that is activated at a certain time in the child's life from an injury, trauma, exposure to a unique toxin, or from their biological clock. When this becomes active, it will cause the manifestation of a hereditary condition that was predetermined at conception. |
Five Generations of Biological Clocks
For example, I was fortunate enough to treat five generations of women. They all had allergies. The eldest grandmother developed hers while in her seventies, the great grandmother developed them in her sixties, the grandmother developed the same condition in her fifties. The mother noticed allergies when she was in college, and her daughter was born with them. Up until the onset of the symptoms, there was no sign of sensitivity in any of the women. In every case, they just seemed to start in one day! This was my introduction to biological clocks and their association with genetic conditions. They are an important consideration in the origin of disease. |
|

Biological Health Clocks Tend to Start Earlier with Each Generation
You know how people say things like " I am not my father." or" I will never be like my mother." With genetic clocks one day we could wake up and be wrong! And the way our DNA is deteriorating with each generation, that morning gets sooner and sooner! So when your 8 year old wakes up and says to you "Don't be such a worry wart, your acting just like your mother." you'll understand.

Managing children with any disorder involves:
- Correcting the diet
- Supporting the development and function of the digestive tract with the appropriate enzymes and natural medications
- Eliminating any identified irritants or toxins
- Treating the involved organs or systems
Initially certain foods need to be eliminated from the diet. As improvement is noted and stability is established, you can re-introduce some of these foods back into the diet, yet sparingly. |
Reccommended Safe Foods:
-
pure maple syrup
-
xylitol
-
rice milks
-
spelt bread and tortillas
-
spelt noodles
-
rice flour products
-
gluten-free products
-
whole fruit
If the child is emotionally stable and happy with little appetite, it is usually because they are not actively growing. However, if they are emotionally sensitive, not happy, or hyperactive with a loss of appetite they are experiencing a disorder that requires the correct treatment to resolve.
|
Foods to Watch out For:
food additives
caffeine
chocolate
sugar
fish
milk products
nuts and seeds
soy products
wheat
fruit juices
acid foods
(ie: popcorn, pineapple, citrus, sour apples, vinegar, honey, tomatoes and eggplant)
It is also necessary to provide frequent meals during the day. Regular meals are not as important as the "grazing" technique. In addition, it is extremely important to remember that children are hungry during their growth cycles, and its better that they eat when they are hungry. |

Here's my son Wiatte emulating his Dad as the "food police". If you haven't guessed who that is yet, go an read the Healthy Diet page! Norman wrote it! Well, healthy food is the foundation to having a healthy body after all. So if you can get that one down, you're doing AMAZING! As for Wiatte really being a food police... He's got a ways to go. So far I hear mostly things like, "Is Pop home?" If this gets a no, then it's followed by, "Well, then can I have ...." You can probably fill in the blank. It's not Twinkies or anything, our splurges involve organic milk, wheat, and chocolate, which we try to limit. Hey, you gotta enjoy life a little sometimes! Unless of course it's wrecking your life!
I have to say that having the right enzymes and knowing when to use them has helped us get away with a lot of fun eating! The two most important ones that we use are Woboplex, which helps to digest milk proteins, and Enzyme Pro which helps with the wheat proteins. Approve it with your own Doc first of course. |
Giving Kids Natural Supplements
Now the hard part involves the child taking the treatment. Children need to be able to take the prescribed natural therapies in the form of capsules or pills. If they are able to swallow pills, managing the treatments is easier. If they have difficulty swallowing, then creative measures are necessary.
One of the easiest methods is to place the pill on a spoon of applesauce. Another method of administering supplements is to grind them with a mortar and pestle or between two spoons. You can also remove the contents from the capsules. Then mix the medications with a little applesauce or acceptable food or juice for easy administration. In addition to prescribed supplements, there are also some basic nutrients that are recommended. As mentioned in the 'healthy diet' section of this site, foods do not always supply the necessary nutrients. For this reason, it is best to supplement the diet of a child with a few basic nutrients. |

General Natural Supplements for Children
When giving multiple vitamins and basic nutrient supplements it is best to be consistently inconsistent. In spite of their primary description, they do not require daily consumption. Instead, give them two to three days a week. Most vitamin and mineral deficiencies resolve themselves within one to two weeks. After this, they are only required two to three days a week. If the child seems more stressed than normal it is a good idea to add them for a few additional days. The most important general supplements are the following:
| General Multiple Vitamin/Mineral: often these are chewable. It is best to use at least two different brands to guarantee the availability of a broad spectrum of nutrients. |
| Vitamin B12 1000mcg: these are easy because the effective ones are chewable. Have a child chew one with a meal once or twice a week. |
| Folic Acid Drops or Pills: This is probably the single most important nutrient for a child, because of its use in nerve development. For this reason, 1600mcg two to four times a week is acceptable. |
| Calcium: These are best in capsular or chewable form. An average dose is 300 to 400mg. |
Remember to consult your child's alternative health practitioner before administering any new supplements to their diet.

When Wiatte and Rio were toddler age I started taking them to gymnastic classes. One day one of the instructors commented on how they were so "in" their bodies, with great physical awareness and coordination. The first thing that I thought of was folic acid. We have regularly given our kids a great liquid folic acid/B12 supplement. Norm has always told me about its effects on the body's development for nerve function. Electrolytes help with that too. Instead of babbling on about the virtues of folic acid, I just said "Yeah they really are!" People usually give me blank stares when I talk shop. So its nice to be able to babble here!
I like to give my kids calcium at night. It helps them to sleep peacefully. Whenever either of them get restless at night and move around a lot, they either have to go to the bathroom, or they need calcium! If they are restless, and I give them a calcium supplement, within 1 minute they are sound asleep without moving a bit! I wish that my parents knew that when I was a kid! I was a very restless sleeper so it was hard to sneak into my parent's bed at night, because I'd kick myself right out. |
