Alternative Menopause Treatments

by
Dr. Norman Easley |
With
each pattern of
conditions there is a unique awareness that develops that can really
serve us
if we can only heal the weakness. The alternative menopause treatments that follow are developed from 36 years of clinical research. They are designed to help
improve
the menopausal experience by removing the imbalances and retaining the
positive
awarenesses.
There
are several treatments
listed for each category of compensation pattern. Choose the one that
is the
most accessible and always add one or more of the herbs since they have
the
ability of 'smoothing out' the treatment. As
always, these treatments need to be monitored by a competent healthcare
practitioner.

Menopause
Pituitary Compensation
Treatment
Since the pituitary gland
is overactive to compensate for the lack of estrogen
and progesterone, the rationale of treatment is to correct the
deficient
ovaries so the pituitary can return to normal. To do this involves the
following treatments. The first
list applies to products that are available to
a naturally-oriented physician and need to be prescribed.
When I treat my
patients I will muscle test them to see which ones that they need, the
most common treatments involve the following supplements.
- EstroPlex (pchoiceline.com):
supports the ovaries in producing hormones.
- MenoPlex (pchoiceline.com):
stabilizes the pituitary and supports the ovaries to produce better
hormones.
- Ovex
or Ovex-P (standardprocess.com): both of these products improve the production of
progesterone.
- Ovatrophin
PMG (standardprocess.com): assists in the production of estrogens.
Natural
Hormone supplementation (phytoestrogens): These are used when the
ovarian
deficiency is greater than the nutritional support can correct.
- PhytoEst Creme (professionalformulas.com)
- Progesterone K-20 (apexenergetics.com)
- Phytoestrogen creams from the

Diet
Recommendations
Try and avoid all the foods that stress
the ovaries and
the body centers that support and process hormones. The worst
offenders are:
-
caffeine
-
black tea
-
colas
-
weight loss pills
-
herbal energy stimulants
because they
directly suppress hormone production. The action of all stimulants, including
stress, reduces ovarian function. In addition, foods rich in hard fats
will
interfere with the liver's ability to supply the ovaries with the raw
materials
necessary to produce hormones.
So stay
away from:
-
fried foods
-
chips
-
bacon
-
pork
-
fatty cuts of beef
-
products
containing mono and di-glycerides
-
hydrogenated oils
-
peanuts
-
nuts
-
pastries
-
doughnuts

Additional
treatments which can be found in a local health food stores and online.
- Chaste Tree (vitex agnus-castus): Improves the quality of pituitary function by stimulating LH and reducing FSH production. For this reason progesterone levels in the body can be increased with the use of Chaste Tree.
- Kava Kava: Has a calming effect on the pituitary and the mood.
- Black Cohosh (cimicufuga racemosa): Probably the best known herb for menopausal disorders and specifically hot flushes. Its primary influence is on the ovaries and uterus. There is also literature that claims Black Cohosh improves LH production with subsequent progesterone increases.
- Dioscorea (Mexican Wild Yam, Colic Root): This is another very popular herb which contains a phytoestrogen called diosgenin. It has a relaxing effect on the uterus and can be used as a substitute and raw material for ovarian hormone production.
- Hops (Bryonia): Yes, it is true. Hops (beer) is good for women, much more so than for men, because of its estrogenic and relaxing properties. As I mentioned earlier that one of the main symptoms for low estrogens is the feeling of emotional isolation and non-availability. I have a patient who works in a local pub. One day he told me of an observation he made while at work. He noticed that at the beginning of the evening the men and women would be primarily sitting in their separate groups. As the evening progressed the women begin to relax and seem more receptive at which time the men seem to be triggered to begin moving in their direction. He mentioned this phenomenon is much more noticeable when the women are drinking beer instead of wine. Some might think it is the alcohol effects but I am partial to the effect of hops on estrogen levels. The beers with the most hops are the dark beers and the bitter beers.
- Squaw Vine (Mitchella Repens): Some claim this herb works in menopausal conditions. I haven't noticed this. I have found that it does help as a uterine tonic stimulating uterine muscles to contract thereby treating heavy periods and promoting smooth deliveries.
- Wild Sage: I have never prescribed this herbal treatment but I treated a sweet lady from Texas who stated when she began having hot flushes, she had her husband go out into the woods and collect wild sage which instantly cured her hot flushes. Some literature states that sage has an estrogenic effect which would account for the results.
- Dong Quai: This Chinese herb is believed to contain ingredients similar to estrogen. Research has not verified this, however. It does help some women with their menopausal symptoms, but the results are inconsistent.
- Shatavari: The name itself means "she who possesses 100 husbands." That pretty much says it all, doesn't it? Shatavari is a traditional Ayurvedic herb used to promote healthy hormone production. It is also claimed to be a libido enhancer.
- Soy Isoflavone: phytoestrogen effect. Years ago a patient called me from Hawaii stating she had developed a horrendous bladder infection. Since most bladder infections are caused by poor estrogen availability to the lining of the bladder, I instructed her to get some soy isoflavones at the local health store. She called back to inform me her bladder infection was gone by the next day.

- Maca: I have found Maca to be one
of the most effective of herbs for increasing liver management of the
raw materials
necessary for the ovary's production of hormones. It also stimulates
the section
of the ovary responsible for producing eggs (ovum) and estrogens. It is
also
claimed to be an aphrodisiac which I have found on occasion to be true.

Menopause
Liver Estriol Compensation Treatment:
Estriol is one of the three
primary estrogens. The highest levels of estriol occur during pregnancy
when it
is being made by the placenta. The liver also has the ability to
convert
circulating stress and androgens into estriol. When estrogens are
deficient,
the liver can produce even more estriol. Estriol is a hormone that is
responsible for producing structural tissue upon which functional cells
can
live. It creates structural fiber.
When this
treatment is effective it creates:
Emotional confidence
They will
often receive
comments about how emotionally together they are.
To treat
this condition requires normalizing the estrogen
production as described above for liver compensations and then treating
the
liver itself.
- Lipaliv:
(pchoiceline.com) For
irritability, obstinacy, and stubbornness.
- Nattokinase:
If there are fibroids present.
- Enzyme
Pro (pchoiceline.com) or
Wobenzyme: These are
enzymes that assist in dissolving fibroids, fibromas and thickened
tissues.

Menopause
Liver Estrone Compensation Treatment
Once the above liver compensation
treatments
are begun, the following products can be added to assist
in promoting healing.
- NuLiv:
(pchoiceline.com) If there
is persistent anger and impatience.
- Electrolyte
2: (pchoiceline.com) If
there is dehydration and periods of difficult thinking,
lightheadedness,
trouble with memory, and leg cramps.

Menopause
Adrenal Cortex Compensation
Treatment
The adrenal cortex can increase its production of testosterone, estrogen, or pregnenelone to make up for a deficient production of hormones by the ovaries. As is the case with all menopausal conditions, it is essential to first try and normalize the ovaries. As the ovaries improve, or as the hormones are increased with replacement therapy, the adrenal cortex compensation will begin to decline. As it does there are additional treatments which can be included to assist in the elimination of the 'heavier' hormones produced by the adrenal cortex compensation.
- EstroPlex (pchoiceline.com): supports the ovaries in producing hormones.
- MenoPlex (pchoiceline.com): stabilizes the pituitary and supports the ovaries to produce better hormones
- Ovex and Ovex-P (standardprocess.com): both of these products improve the production of progesterone

- Lecithin: Either in capsules or
granular, lecithin helps to thin bile so spent estrogens can be
eliminated. It
also provides the adrenal cortex with the basic raw material to produce
a
better hormone.

properties. As I mentioned earlier that one of the main symptoms for

Menopause Adrenal Cortex
Compensation
Increased Testosterone Treatment:
In
addition to the above choices made from the
Adrenal Cortex Compensation Treatment list, the following
supplements can be
added. These help remove excess testosterone accumulations.
- Calcium D-Glucarate:
This is a biochemical substance that is naturally present
in the body. Its function is to assist in eliminating various toxins
including
used estrogenic and stress hormones.
- Lecithin:
This is a phospholipid found in plants and egg
yolks. In the body it is used to emulsify fats (to make water soluble),
to help
process cholesterol, and to assist in removing used hormones. It also
assists
in preparing cholesterol to be used by the ovaries and adrenal cortex
so they
can make their respective hormones.
- Adrenal
Cortex 30x: This is a homeopathic that helps restore
the adrenal gland to a normal level of function once the estrogen and
progesterone are adequate. It is generally needed when the symptoms
have pretty
much been resolved and the adrenal compensation condition (weight,
water
retention, muscle fatigue) continue.

Menopause
Sympathetic Nervous
System Compensation
The
sympathetic nervous system can produce some of the more 'colorful'
menopausal
conditions. It is characterized by heightened sensitivity which creates
a more
reactive and expressive nature. Suddenly there is melodrama. It also
makes a
woman far more sensitive and aware of their environment. I treated a patient years ago
that was just such a
case. She was sitting quietly, almost timidly, in the room when I
entered. She
briefly looked up at me and informed me that the US Navy was sending
messages
to a submarine off the coast of
Oregon
(80 miles away) and the vibrations in her head were keeping her awake
at night!
She went on to say that over the years of having this condition she was
able to
identify Russian communications, satellite signals, and plain old
surges in
household power. Needless to say I was extremely intrigued. She had
other
symptoms characteristic of her menopausal condition; hot flushes,
headaches,
moodiness, and some depressions which she seemed more interested in
alleviating. I prescribed the necessary medications and she informed me
that
she would have to start them later because she was scheduled to appear
at
Tektronix lab. There she would be placed in a special room (Faraday
Cage) that obstructs
all electromagnetic energy. Once situated, the technicians would
systematically
input a single frequency into the room to see if she could identify it.
She
returned a month later for a follow-up appointment. At this time, she
had good
news and bad news. Her Tektronix experiment was entirely successful.
She was
able to identify every frequency being used by our armed forces and the
ones
from the Russians. In addition she was able to inform them of some
Russian frequencies
of which the government was unaware. That was the good news. The bad
news was
the treatment worked so well in eliminating all of her symptoms she no
longer
had her "gift." To this I replied that it would be best to take the
treatment when she needed and not take it when she had a
"performance." I also instructed her that as she improved she would
be able to consciously turn her gift on or off as the situation
demanded. I
realize this is an extreme case but it is something that can happen,
usually in
much milder degrees, when the sympathetic nervous system is
compensating for
low hormones.

Thyroid Inefficiency Treatment:
I
have learned from clinical experience that more than half of the women
who
enter menopause develop some form of thyroid problem. A thyroid
disorder can
begin around menopause because of the pituitary's dominant interest in
assisting the ovaries. They can also develop because substitute
estrogens that
are produced by a compensation gland can interfere with the thyroid
hormone
transport protein (thyroid binding globulin-TBG). This can also happen
from
liver stress of managing poor quality estrogens which in turn reduces
the production
of TBG. When these factors result in a thyroid inefficiency, the
quality of
thyroid hormone being produced is not 100% effective. To remedy this
situation,
the thyroid will receive periodic boosts from the pituitary increasing
thyroid
hormone levels and causing the characteristic "wired and tired"
sensations. This period of over activity causes multiple thoughts,
being easily
bored, a distaste for small talk, and multiple subject changes in
conversations. This will then be followed by a down-time causing
fatigue,
unassociated depression, and sluggish thoughts. This cycle can occur
several
times in a day, or, the highs and lows can be drawn out over several
days.
Treatment involves improving the quality of thyroid function while the
ovaries
are being treated.
- Thytrophin
PMG (standard process)
- Iodine
- If
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis has been
diagnosed add
- Tyrosine-500mg
- Thyroid

Thyroid Deficiency (Hypothyroid)
Treatment
Thyroid problems can begin around
menopause because
of the pituitary's dominant interest in assisting the ovaries. They can
also
develop because substitute estrogens being produced by a compensation
can
interfere with the transport protein (thyroid binding globulin-TBG).
This can
also happen from liver stress from managing poor estrogens and in turn
preventing the production of TBG. When these factors result in a
thyroid
deficiency, thyroid hormone levels drop below normal. To remedy this
situation,
the pituitary will attempt to increase thyroid hormone levels with TSH
(Thyroid
Stimulating Hormone). Hypothyroid symptoms include fatigue, unattached
depression, and sluggish thoughts. Treatment involves improving the
quality of
thyroid function while the ovaries are being treated.
- Thytrophin
PMG (standard process)
- Iodine is needed if patient is at a
healthy weight.
- If
there is an increased weight
gain then add Tyrosine-500mg
- Thyroid

Final Notes:
It is important to remember two factors when taking supplements designed to assist in alleviating menopausal symptoms.
First, as the symptoms begin to improve, the it will be because the hormone levels will be gradually increasing. As they do, the liver, which is responsible for processing them for elimination after they have done their work, can become overloaded. This can cause:
bloating
water retention
indigestion
heartburn
evening headaches
water weight gain by the evening
In these cases, you will want to include EstraLiv (pchoiceline.com) in your program and reduce the ovary support by half until the liver gets caught up. Once better, you can return to the dosage that is working for you.
Second, every cell in the body has an estrogen receptor site. It is sort of like a docking station where the estrogen hooks up, does its thing and then is instructed to leave. With compensation hormones, the cell often does not have the correct instruction code and the hormone continues to hang around. As long as this is happening, a new hormone cannot exert its effect. In this case, most of the treatments as well as prescription hormones will not work as well as they should. There will be hormone deficiency symptoms as well as hormone excess. To remedy this requires a homeopathic (Estradiol 30x or Estrogen 30x) which stimulates the body to remove the resistant hormones. Once the body is clean, the treatments should work.
|
|
The Elusive Hot Flashes
There is also another point
which is important to mention. The treatment of hot flashes can be very
frustrating. It is
very common that a
completely unrelated condition can cause them. I treated a patient who
was
suffering from severe hot flashes that occurred during the day as well
as all
night. On the initial evaluation, the results were pretty consistent
for
normalizing the hormones. She experienced absolutely no difference
within two
weeks. Upon the second evaluation, I isolated a
deficient heart condition which caused a persistent state of
dehydration. Within a few days of following this treatment her hot
flashes were
completely gone! Another case had the same initial results
but when her pancreatic hypoglycemia was
treated, her hot flashes stopped. Another cause for poor
response to ovary
treatments is the liver. If the liver is unable to process the hormones
that
are in the process of being discarded, the body will not allow any new
ones to
come in. Finally, if the liver is unable to build the transport
substance or is
unable to move raw materials to the ovary, the hot flashes will not
improve.
So don't be discouraged. Your
body wants to be healed and it knows how to do it. We just have to
interpret
what it is trying to tell us. If your results are inadequate for the
treatments
being followed and the time allowed, move on to a section of this
website that
describes what might be the true cause of your disorder.
